This week’s wrap features the Rugby World Cup Cape Town Tour Bus, which was wrapped by Signz.co.za.
One of the biggest challenges of the wrapping project was the time frame, ‘As soon as the Springboks bagged their phenomenal win against the All Blacks on the Saturday night, it was announced in the post-match television broadcast that the date for the Cape Town leg of the Trophy Tour would be held the following Friday. SA Rugby signed off on the artwork to be printed on the Tuesday,’ said Leslie Rose, Signz.co.za.
‘Secondly, Eskom announced that loadshedding would be implemented again on Monday following that weekend, so that caused some panic. Lastly, the buses that were sponsored by City Sightseeing for the event had to be wrapped in media that would not damage the existing branding on the buses when the ‘Springbok’ wrap had to be removed.’
After a few phone calls to print media suppliers and testing the application, conformity and adhesion of a few swatches of printed media with lamination, the company identified Grafiprint Mx114P, an ‘easy-apply’ monomeric grey-back white self-adhesive vinyl; and Grafiprint M011P, a matt UV laminate, both supplied by Maizey Plastics, as suitable materials.
‘We knew it was going to be a bit of a juggling act, as monomeric vinyl is most certainly not intended for vehicle wrapping, however the wrap was only going to be on the bus for 3-4 days. As time was our biggest challenge, we opted for an easy-apply vinyl. There was also not enough time to allow the inks to cure, so we thought it best to laminate the vinyl. This enabled us to work more rigorously with the print without the risk of scratching and scuffing during application. The matt laminate finish also meant the bus looked and photographed a lot better. We were certain that with the correct pre-cleaning, surface preparation and application, the buses would look great.’
