Printing SA is offering a bursary to two passionate individuals for a Screen Printing Workshop valued at over R3000 each. Entrants must be available to start the course in June 2018 to qualify for the prize.
Foundational Learning Programme
Over and above this competition, Printing SA launched a new Foundational Learning Programme (FLP) on 2 May, which will run through to November this year. This particular new skills pool strategy will provide member companies with talented individuals who are eager to take up career opportunities in the printing and packaging industry. Furthermore, Printing SA has received a grant from the FP&M SETA to fund 80 Learners on the FLP this year. Member companies are encouraged to enroll learners on the FLP (or any component thereof) as part of their BBBEE Socio-Economic Development spend.
South Africa’s print and packaging industry is hard at work in helping develop the industry and is constantly on the lookout for ways and opportunities to create and grow employment opportunities within the industry, according to Steve Thobela, CEO of Printing SA.
2017 competition winner
Such bursary competitions have been run for the past two years and one such success story from last year’s competition, is Khuthandzo Carrington Muliwa.
Muliwa was the first winner of the bursary competition that kicked off in 2017. He received a fully sponsored course by Printing SA. His dream was to run a printing business. As a teenager, he inherited an old broken printer and Pentium 3 laptop from his late uncle, and after repairing them, started his own home business. He formulated CV’s for job seekers as well as other printed material. Unfortunately, due to a lack of business skills, his business didn’t succeed. However, this did not make him give up on his dream.
Prior to winning the bursary, he began saving money with which he went on to purchase an A24 vinyl plotter, multi-functional heat press and a sublimation printer. His goal was to re-build his business and provide an opportunity to further assist members in his community by assisting job seekers with well formulated and well written CV’s.
Thobela explained: ‘Muliwa stood out as a worthy applicant as he certainly showed his commitment and dedication; and as Printing SA, we were thrilled to have kick-started this programme to provide a worthy recipient the opportunity to provide much needed skills to start over and grow a business to the next level.’
