Science Based Targets (SBT) is an international initiative established in 2015 to support the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to ‘well-below’ 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The initiative involves collaboration among CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Kyocera Corporation announced that the Kyocera Group’s target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30 percent by the year 2030 has received an official endorsement from the SBT initiative.

More than 550 companies worldwide have joined the initiative, and more than 200 have received SBT endorsement for their targets. As part of its longstanding programme to reduce GHG emissions, Kyocera recently committed to reduce GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 (Scope 1,2* and Scope 1,2,3* from base year 2013).

In parallel to this goal, Kyocera is also targeting a 10x increase in renewable energy adoption by 2030 compared to 2013 levels. By setting this target, Kyocera will continue to work toward the achievement of a sustainable, low-carbon society through implementation of new environmental and renewable energy approaches including the installation of off-site renewable energy generating systems, which are capable of supplying power for production.

Scope 1: direct emission associated with fuel consumption and production processes.
Scope 2: indirect emission associated with consumption of power or heat purchased from outside.
Scope 3: indirect emission other than Scope 1 or 2. Including procurement of raw materials, transport, use and disposal of products, as well as employee commuting and business trips.
