Adrian Wolman, owner of Sign-Tronic, reported that the company had phenomenal interest in their stand at the Sign Africa expo in Durban last week. Two groundbreaking technologies were showcased and well received, resulting in six printers, including two swissQprint Nyala’s, two swissQprint Impala’s and two Oce printers being sold and delivered just one week after the expo.
The first technology to be showcased was the Obelisk plotter, which allows sign-makers to produce completely illuminated 3D foam signage or letters with a brilliant finish made from XPS foam, a locally manufactured polystyrene for insulation. Using a swissQprint UV flatbed printer, Sign-Tronic demonstrated how users can simply print directly onto the 10mm foam, cut it out on the Obelisk with perfect precision and coat the 3D letters in a unique, liquid XPS coating for a high gloss, protective finish. The coating gives longevity and shields the signage. There is a five year warranty on signage with the coating. The 3D sign is ready for mounting after a simple three component assembly with quick-set adhesives.
This patented process is the brainchild of Wolman, who understood that the full potential of the Obelisk had not been unleashed. The popularity of this solution is a minimum of 65% saving in producing illuminated signage and there is no barrier to entry. Users can rent an Obelisk monthly for a very affordable amount and it is a great addition to grow a business with a UV flatbed printer.
Sign-Tronic also launched UV ink to print on untreated fabrics in Durban. The ink can print on untreated natural fabrics as well as standard fabrics with no post-treatment required. The ink was demonstrated on the swissQprint Nyala 2, and visitors could see printed samples on uncoated polyester, coated polyester, linen, cotton, silk, bull denim, cushions, upholstery and more on the stand. A challenge for printers has been trying to achieve the same results as traditional time consuming processes of printing with UV on natural fabrics. The new formulation of UV ink, developed and patented by Wolman, overcomes this challenge.
