In the ever-evolving world of print and document tech, Altron Document Solutions stands proud as a leading force, shaping the future of printing across Africa. This is a sponsored article.

At the heart of this success lies a team of dedicated individuals, each bringing their unique expertise and passion to the table.

Among these key members is Willie Du Plooy, Branch Manager. Here we unpack his decades-long career and discover what makes him a dedicated and true ambassador for the print industry.

With a career spanning over three decades, Willie is a seasoned veteran of the print industry. As a Branch Manager at Altron Document Solutions, he has witnessed first-hand the industry’s evolution from analogue to digital with a unique blend of experience and enthusiasm.

Starting as a junior low volume technician in 1989, Willie climbed the ranks through sheer determination and a deep-seated passion for the industry. His early years were marked by hands-on technical expertise, a stark contrast to the more automated systems of today. However, he has embraced these changes, recognising the efficiency gains they bring.

Willie’s unwavering belief in the enduring relevance of print is evident in his work. He contends that while technology has transformed the industry, paper remains an integral part of our lives and he remains a staunch advocate for its tangible benefits in particular. ‘I always tell my team to work with a paper trail,’ he emphasised, highlighting the importance of physical documentation for accountability and reference. ‘When all else fails, you can always fall back on a paper trail.’

When it comes to company culture, Willie is clear, ‘We’re a family. If I take the combined years of the people reporting into me, we’d be very close to 200! My staff turnover is very low, which tells you people enjoy what they do here.’

Central to Willie’s success, too, is his commitment to fostering strong customer relationships: ‘Being loyal to your customer, being committed, being true and delivering on your promises, are the keys to successful client interactions.’ This philosophy has underpinned his career, leading to long-term client partnerships.

Willie further emphasised the importance of personal connection in building trust with customers. Regular client visits, both formal and informal, are a cornerstone of his approach. ‘Sometimes being in a more relaxed environment, around a lunch table for instance, can help you bond more,’ he explained. ‘You can talk family and life, not just work or office, and still get to know what your customer wants and needs.’

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Willie is an avid outdoorsman, finding solace in hunting and deep-sea fishing (‘I don’t do pap gooi,’ he laughed). His love for the outdoors and visiting lesser-known gems dotted around South Africa make for a refreshing counterpoint to his fast-paced, day-to-day world of calls and meetings – many after-hours, which he doesn’t mind because ‘that’s the job’.

A personal anecdote he shared perfectly illustrates the profound impact his career in print has had on his life, ‘When my daughter got married, she asked that I wear a black shirt for the occasion. I had only one in my wardrobe and it had the Xerox logo on it. She said to absolutely wear it, saying that Xerox had played a significant role in shaping all our lives. She was right – I am what I am because of Xerox. Xerox made me. Xerox built me.’

As Willie approaches his 36th year in print, his enthusiasm for the industry remains undiminished. He views the future with optimism, believing that advancements in technology, such as AI and automation, will only serve to strengthen the industry and Altron Document Solutions’ position in the market.

It’s clear that Willie’s deep industry knowledge, coupled with a forward-thinking approach and a strong customer focus, make him an invaluable asset to Altron Document Solutions.

Willie’s passion for his work is certainly evident in his outlook, but it’s his parting remark that really seals the deal, ‘I enjoy what I’m doing. I’ll work until three days after I’m dead, if the Good Lord lets me.’
