Sealand Gear, a South African gear and apparel brand committed to sustainability, upcycling and environmental stewardship, is an ideal partner for digital printing companies who want to dispose of their textile offcuts in a sustainable way.
The company strives to craft high-quality products while minimising their environmental impact by turning waste destined for landfill into beautiful, valuable and durable products. In doing so, they have saved over 80 tons of toxic material from the earth.
Sealand started on a very simple premise. Durable, often beautiful advertising banner material was being sent to landfill not because it was actually waste, but simply because it was no longer fit for its intended purpose. By repurposing this material, Sealand gives value to this useful, but often polluting resource, diverting it away from landfill and creating not only jobs, but high quality products in the process. Through their efforts, 11,762kg of advertising banners were diverted from landfill in 2023.
At the heart of their operations lies their Polyester Twill (Poly Twill), generously donated by partners looking to divert their post consumer textile waste from landfill. Poly Twill is a tactile and durable material, perfect for inners. It’s commonly used as an in-store advertising material. All Sealand bags and apparel are handmade by valued craftspeople from waste or responsibly and ethically sourced materials. These materials are then combined with high-quality hardware, conscious design, and expert craftsmanship to create gear that will last a lifetime.
Each of their 100,000+ bags made since 2015 have featured a unique and vibrant Poly Twill lining, and each Sealand bag is unique. Their Poly Twill is sourced from corporate partners locally, such as Pick n Pay, Ackermans, Pepkor and Mr Price. The logistics are handled by major printing partners of these businesses, like Digital Express Printing and Hirt & Carter. Besides bags, Sealand Gear also upcycles waste to create stylish apparel, travel wallets, zip pullers and pin badges.
What they have achieved so far:
– 83.229 tons of textile waste diverted from landfill since 2015.
– 2 080.725 tons of CO2 emissions saved.
– 642,000kg Carbon Credits purchased from responsible social and environmental initiatives.
– Recycling programmes at all of their office and production centres.
– 89.9% of office waste recycled.
– R932,380 donated through 1% For The Planet to date.
